The Aviary: Bring Back the Books

RESTAURANT TYPOGRAPHIC LOGO DESIGN

Housed in a re-imagined main street storefront, this unique coffee, tea and bookshop celebrates Big Sur bohemian culture with a hit of apothecary surrealism. The Aviary offers organic coffee, teas and baked goods. Part of the local community, The Aviary is a gathering place to catch up with friends, work, or hang out and read. The typographic logo design is a graphic response to the fading presence of books in the digital age; juxtaposing the 8-bit digital text against worn bindings of books creates a subtle visual tension. Surreal imagery alludes to the influence of Edgar Alan Poe and his tales of mystery and the macabre.

The interior space is bursting with curiosities from a bygone era, including eye charts, wallpaper covered with vintage books, distressed Chesterfield sofas and a gallery wall with Joseph Cornell-style assemblage art. With their severe angular arms, the Danish-style chairs modernize the space while adding directional tension to it.
